Blinken: China is Attempting to Influence Upcoming U.S. Elections

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently spotlighted allegations of China’s attempts to influence the upcoming U.S. elections, despite previous commitments by Chinese President Xi Jinping to refrain from such actions. These revelations surfaced during Blinken’s three-day diplomatic visit to China, aimed at addressing multiple contentious issues and maintaining dialogue amid rising tensions between the two superpowers.

Blinken explicitly reiterated concerns that had been previously voiced by President Joe Biden during a summit in San Francisco. At that summit, Xi had pledged non-interference in the electoral process of the United States. Despite these assurances, Blinken indicated that the U.S. has observed activities that suggest otherwise. He stated in his CNN interview, “We have seen, generally speaking, evidence of attempts to influence and arguably interfere, and we want to make sure that that’s cut off as quickly as possible.”

While Blinken did not disclose specific details of the evidence during the interview, other reports suggest a more comprehensive picture. Notably, The New York Times reported earlier in April that covert Chinese social media accounts were impersonating American supporters of former President Donald Trump. These accounts are said to be promoting divisive content and conspiracy theories aimed at stoking domestic divisions and undermining President Biden ahead of the November election.

This strategy of playing on existing social divisions is not unique to the U.S. China or actors believed to be affiliated with Beijing have faced accusations of similar political interference tactics in other nations, including Canada. This pattern of behavior raises concerns about the extent and impact of China’s influence operations beyond its borders.

Blinken’s trip, his second to China in less than a year, was part of ongoing high-level engagements that seek to manage the strategic competition between the U.S. and China. This delicate balancing act involves cooperation on mutual interests while being candid about disagreements to avoid escalating conflicts. During his visit, Blinken also raised issues concerning China’s support for Russia’s defense industrial base, which the U.S. perceives as a facilitator of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The U.S. stance is clear: any interference by China in its elections is viewed as a grave concern, warranting close monitoring and decisive responses if necessary.

While we agree this is a grave threat, ACZ is skeptical of Blinken and his motives. Is Blinken about to “disclose” that China is helping Trump’s campaign against Biden? Given the progress China has made in its expansionist plans during the Biden Administration, this makes little sense. And given that Hunter Biden has received a great deal of money from China and that President Biden likely benefited from this, and the suspicions that China is perfectly willing to blackmail Biden if his policies become too harsh, we believe China is wholeheartedly behind Biden in his quest for another term.
