China Moves Into Somalia Under the Banner of Sovereignty

China has announced a major expansion of its support for Somalia, but it is not about peace or development. It is about power. On January 11, 2026, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi publicly pledged that Beijing would consistently support Somalia in safeguarding its national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity and would oppose Somaliland’s collusion with the Taiwan authorities in seeking independence. He also said China will deepen cooperation with Somalia in economic, security, and defense fields no matter what happens in the worl

Wang made these statements during a high level phone call with Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Dhaay. Dhaay responded by thanking China for helping Somalia oppose separatism and terrorism and for backing Somalia’s stability and development. On paper, this looks like a normal diplomatic exchange. In reality, it is China inserting itself into one of the most fragile regions on Earth for its own strategic reasons.

The Battle Over Somaliland and Why It Matters

Somaliland has operated as a self governing region since 1991, when it declared independence after the collapse of Somalia’s central government. It has its own government, military, currency, and passport. It has also held elections and adopted a constitution. Even so, it has not been recognized by most of the world as an independent country.

The issue exploded in late 2025 when Israel officially recognized Somaliland as a sovereign state on December 26. That move shocked the region and triggered a diplomatic firestorm. Somalia immediately protested, and China moved quickly to back Somalia and condemn the recognition as outside interference that threatens regional stability.

China has made it clear that it views Somaliland as an inseparable part of Somalia. Beijing rejects any claim of independence and says any attempt by Somaliland to gain recognition through foreign support is illegitimate.

Taiwan and Somaliland Are the Real Target

China’s anger is not really about Somaliland itself. It is about Taiwan. Somaliland and Taiwan have built close ties and have representative offices in each other’s capitals. Both are places that operate as independent political entities but lack wide international recognition.

For Beijing, this is intolerable. China sees any relationship between Taiwan and another government as a direct challenge to its claim that Taiwan is part of China. Wang Yi specifically attacked what he called Somaliland’s collusion with Taiwan authorities. In China’s eyes, Taiwan is using Somaliland to gain diplomatic space, and Somaliland is using Taiwan to build international legitimacy.

By backing Somalia’s claim over Somaliland, China is trying to crush this partnership and isolate Taiwan even further on the world stage.

Why China Is Rushing Into Somalia

China is not stepping into Somalia out of goodwill. Somalia sits in the Horn of Africa, one of the most strategic locations on the planet. It lies near major shipping routes, the Red Sea, and the entrance to the Suez Canal. Whoever has influence there has leverage over global trade and security.

China has pledged to expand economic, security, and defense cooperation with Somalia. That means money, training, and potentially military and intelligence cooperation. China has also backed Somalia’s rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in January 2026, giving Mogadishu more global visibility and Beijing more influence inside the UN system.

China has also invited Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to attend the second China Arab States Summit in Beijing. This is how China builds loyalty. It offers status, recognition, and investment in exchange for political alignment.

Somalia, which is battling separatism, terrorism, and economic collapse, sees China as a powerful ally that can help it push back against Somaliland and gain international backing.

The Obstacles Standing in China’s Way

China’s push is not going smoothly. Wang Yi was supposed to visit Mogadishu in January 2026, which would have been the first high level Chinese visit in four decades. Roads were cleared and preparations were made. Then suddenly the visit was canceled.

Chinese officials said it was due to schedule changes after friendly consultations, but Wang later told staff in Mogadishu that the Chinese mission faced the most complex security situation and the most challenging working and living conditions. In other words, Somalia is dangerous even for China.

There is also growing international resistance. While the United States still officially recognizes Somalia’s territorial integrity, some US congressional committees are pushing to deepen engagement with Somaliland as a way to counter Chinese influence in the Horn of Africa. Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has also created a new diplomatic front that China cannot easily shut down.

ACZ Editor: This is a rather cynical battle, but oddly enough it could end up being good for both Somalia and Somaliland – right up to the time it becomes a surrogate war between China and Taiwan.
