China Will “Contain” Foreign Influences Encouraging Taiwan Independence

Despite the election of a pro-independence president in Taiwan, a major blow to the Chinese agenda of reunification, China intends to continue the pressure on Taiwan and moreover to “contain” efforts by foreign powers to support Taiwan’s independence.

The heart of the issue lies in China’s perception of Taiwan, which it considers an inalienable part of its territory, a stance starkly opposed by the government and many citizens of the democratically governed island. The recent election of Vice President Lai Ching-te as Taiwan’s next president has further exacerbated tensions between the two sides. Lai, who is viewed by Beijing as a perilous separatist, has made multiple overtures for dialogue, which have been steadfastly rebuffed by China, underscoring the deep-rooted mistrust and ideological chasm that divides them.

China’s strategy for the year is ambitious and multi-dimensional, aimed squarely at “containing” any form of foreign interference in Taiwan’s affairs. This broad strategy encompasses a wide array of actions including but not limited to, obstructing U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, discouraging visits by foreign officials to Taipei, and neutralizing any form of international support for Taiwan’s independence. The message emanating from Beijing is unequivocal: it views any external involvement in Taiwan as an intolerable breach of its sovereign affairs, integral to its national identity and territorial integrity.

This renewed emphasis on Taiwan is encapsulated in the remarks of Wang Huning, a high-ranking official in China’s ruling Communist Party, who articulated the critical nature of the Taiwan issue in a recently concluded two-day meeting focused on the subject. Wang’s comments underscored the imperative to “resolutely combat the division of Taiwan independence, contain interference from external forces, firmly support the patriotic and reunification forces on the island, unite Taiwan compatriots, and maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” These words are not just a reiteration of China’s long-standing policy but a clarion call for a concerted effort to suppress any aspirations for Taiwanese independence and to challenge the influence of external actors in the region.

The escalation in China’s rhetoric from merely opposing Taiwan independence to actively fighting against it marks a significant shift in policy, reflecting a more assertive, potentially confrontational approach towards Taiwan and its international allies. This change in tone, as articulated by Wang Huning, who emphasized the need to “further grasp the strategic initiative to achieve the complete unification of the motherland,” suggests a readiness to employ a broader spectrum of tactics to bring Taiwan under its sway. Such tactics could range from diplomatic isolation and economic coercion to military posturing, aiming to intimidate Taiwan into submission while curtailing its international space.

It remains to be seen how China will escalate its rhetoric and actions, and how it intends to stop foreign support. The West has already begun decoupling from China and with China’s suffering economy it does not have the clout to bully other countries that it did just a few short years ago. But rest assured, it does have options, military, political and and economic.
