China’s Darkest Crime: Forced Organ Harvesting in the Pursuit of Immortality

We have reported on China’s inhuman organ harvesting operations several times, but it MUST be kept top of mind. Nicole Fernandez, writing for The Borgen Project, in her latest article shows how China’s transplant system has become one of the most compromised practices in modern medicine. Her reporting in Poverty, Power and Organ Trafficking in China reveals a crisis that extends far beyond China’s borders. When combined with other investigations, survivor testimony, and a shocking hot mic exchange between Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, the picture becomes one of the most heinous, sinister, and inhuman activities in history.

A Survivor’s Story

The case of Cheng Pei Ming illustrates the brutality of forced organ harvesting. Arrested in 2002 for his faith, Cheng recalls being told he needed surgery. “They said that I had to undergo an operation, but I firmly refused. They held me down and gave me an injection and I quickly lost consciousness,” he recounted. When he awoke, he was shackled to a hospital bed, his body cut open and part of his liver and lung missing. “I was still in the hospital and felt terrible pain in my side. There was a bloody tube connected to me. I was shackled to the bed.”

Cheng is one of the very few who lived to tell his story. Human rights experts note that survivors are almost nonexistent because organ harvesting itself causes death. Professor Sen Nieh, who later helped Cheng escape, said, “Nobody knows what we meant by a survivor of forced organ harvesting because 99.9 percent die after being organ harvested.”

The Religious and Political Targets

Evidence shows that China has systematically targeted prisoners of conscience for decades. A 2019 Tribunal chaired by Sir Geoffrey Nice concluded “beyond a reasonable doubt” that organs were being harvested from Falun Gong practitioners, Uyghurs, Tibetans, and underground Christians. Tribunal lawyer Hamid Sabi told the United Nations Human Rights Council that the practice was “one of the worst mass atrocities of this century.”

Sabi explained that victims were “killed to order…cut open while still alive for their kidneys, livers, hearts, lungs, cornea, and skin to be removed and turned into commodities for sale.” He warned UN members that they had a “legal obligation” to act.

The Tribunal also described China’s vast network of detention centers as organ banks. Sabi said, “The detainment of minority groups for this purpose is a possible charge of genocide,” explicitly comparing Beijing’s behavior to the Holocaust.

Poverty and the Coerced Supply Chain

China’s system feeds on poverty and repression. Nicole Fernandez noted that prisoners, rural poor, and political dissidents are the most vulnerable. They often lack legal representation, education, or money to resist. As one lawmaker testified, “The short wait times achieved by transplant hospitals suggest that people are killed on demand for their organs.”

Research confirms this. Reports documented liver transplants with wait times as short as one to two weeks, a timeline impossible under any legitimate voluntary donor system. Dr. Torsten Trey of Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting explained, “Every person who travels to China for an organ causes the death of another human.”

The Mobile Death Vans

The horror does not stop in hospitals. Since the late 1990s, China has deployed mobile execution vans, disguised as ordinary buses, that roam the countryside delivering lethal injections on the spot. Inside, prisoners are killed in windowless chambers and their organs harvested immediately.

Chinese officials defended the vans as cheaper and more “humane” than firing squads. But rights groups believe they exist to make organ harvesting faster and more secretive. The World Coalition Against the Death Penalty estimated at least 8,000 executions took place annually in China from 2007 onward. Amnesty International recorded 883 executions outside China in 2022, underscoring the scale of Beijing’s actions.

An observer put it bluntly: “Imagine a bus roaming around New York or Miami that picks people up and executes them on the spot – and then drops them off for the organ harvesting. Notice there are no courts in this mix, no due process, no right to an attorney. Just death.”

Xi and Putin’s Hot Mic Moment

On September 3, 2025, a military parade in Beijing became the setting for an extraordinary revelation. As Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un stood together on the Tiananmen rostrum, a live microphone caught Xi and Putin discussing life extension through organ transplants.

“Earlier, people rarely lived to 70, but these days at 70 you are still a child,” Xi said in Russian through a translator. Putin replied in Mandarin, “As biotechnology advances, human organs can be continuously transplanted, allowing us to become younger and younger, perhaps even achieve immortality.” Xi then added, “Predictions are that in this century, there’s a chance of living to 150.”

Afterward, Putin confirmed the conversation to reporters. “Modern means, both health improvement, and medical means, and even all kinds of surgical ones related to organ replacement, allow humanity to hope that active life will continue not as it does today.”

Human rights expert Nina Shea responded, “This unguarded conversation between these two tyrants lends credence to our concerns that they are creating a real-life science fiction dystopia by forced organ harvesting from those they see as political enemies.”

The U.S. Response

The United States and Europe have begun to acknowledge the atrocity. House Speaker Mike Johnson said the hot mic moment highlighted “horrific stories of these organ transplants” in China, stressing that “they take it from unwilling donors … to put it mildly.” Representative Chris Smith compared it directly to Nazi atrocities: “The act of killing for organs is right out of Nazi Germany and Joseph Mengele.”

In 2025, Congress passed the Stop Forced Organ Harvesting Act, threatening up to 20 years in prison and fines of $250,000 for anyone involved in the practice. The Falun Gong Protection Act followed, with sanctions targeting Chinese officials responsible for persecution. Several U.S. states, including Texas and Tennessee, enacted bans on health insurance coverage for transplants involving Chinese organs.

Senator Marco Rubio pledged to keep pressing forward: “We would obviously be helpful in any way we can,” he said, calling the crime too horrific to ignore.

Even Chinese authorities cannot defend the practice. Instead, they smear the victims. Analyst Heng He explained, “The CCP is very afraid of this being further exposed, so they try to discredit Falun Gong rather than defend organ harvesting itself, because nobody can.”

Dr. Sean Lin put it bluntly: “The darkest crime they’re doing right now is organ harvesting. Maybe there are even darker crimes, but this is the one they fear being revealed.”

For survivor Cheng Pei Ming, the truth is personal. “I am one of the lucky ones—I survived. But there are countless others who did not. Their voices were silenced, but I will continue to speak for them.”

This is a moral test not just for China, but for the entire world. The Chinese Communist Party has turned human bodies into commodities. The question now is whether nations will confront this atrocity or continue to turn away.
