China’s Massive Military Complex, 10 Times the Size of the Pentagon

Recent satellite imagery has revealed a massive new military complex under construction in China, located about 20 miles southwest of Beijing. This facility, estimated to be 10 times the size of the Pentagon, has raised concerns among U.S. intelligence officials and global analysts. The project, dubbed “Beijing Military City,” is believed to be part of China’s long-term strategy to enhance its military command and control capabilities, particularly in the event of a nuclear confrontation.

The discovery of this facility was made through satellite images analyzed by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 program and other intelligence sources. The imagery, first reported by the Financial Times, shows rapid construction on a 1,500-acre site. Analysts noted features such as deep underground tunnels and heavily reinforced bunkers, which suggest a command-and-control center capable of withstanding nuclear attacks. The secrecy surrounding the project is also evident on the ground, with tight security, restricted access, and drone surveillance bans in place.

Beijing Military City in China’s Military Strategy

Experts believe that this facility will serve as a highly secure wartime command center for China’s top military and political leadership, including President Xi Jinping. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has a history of constructing underground bunkers, dating back to the Cold War when Mao Zedong built deep shelters during the 1969 border conflict with the Soviet Union. The scale of this new project, however, suggests an even greater emphasis on nuclear readiness and strategic defense.

According to analysts, China is preparing for potential conflicts, particularly with the United States. The new command center is expected to replace the aging Western Hills command complex as the primary military nerve center, capable of withstanding even the most advanced bunker-busting weapons.

Is This Facility a Threat?

The construction of Beijing Military City comes at a time when China is significantly expanding its nuclear arsenal. The U.S. Department of Defense estimates that China will double its current nuclear warhead stockpile—projected to reach 1,500 by 2035—bringing it closer to nuclear parity with the United States.

This expansion signals a shift in China’s military doctrine from a minimum deterrent strategy to a more assertive nuclear posture. The sheer size and strategic location of the new facility suggest that China is not only preparing for the possibility of nuclear war but is also positioning itself as a dominant global military power.

The U.S. Perspective and Response

The Pentagon and CIA are closely monitoring developments, assessing how this complex fits into China’s broader ambitions. Former CIA Deputy Assistant Director Dennis Wilder has noted that this project confirms Beijing’s push for an “advanced nuclear warfighting capability,” shifting its military stance from purely defensive to one that can sustain prolonged conflict.

U.S. policymakers are debating potential responses, including increasing military deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region and strengthening alliances with nations like Japan, South Korea, and Australia. The Pentagon is also ramping up its nuclear modernization efforts to maintain strategic superiority.

As China approaches the centenary of the PLA in 2027, experts predict that Beijing will continue to expand its military infrastructure and nuclear capabilities. The construction of Beijing Military City is likely just one component of a broader strategy aimed at asserting China’s dominance in global military affairs.

ACZ Editor: Don’t be surprised if this turns out to be a secondary control center, the primary being in a much more secret location.
