Queens Assemblyman Ron Kim has exposed an alarming plot allegedly orchestrated by agents tied to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to undermine his re-election campaign, a story first reported by the New York Post. This case of election interference, which included a high-ranking official from the governor’s office, marks a direct attempt by foreign powers to meddle in U.S. elections, raising concerns about national security and the integrity of American democracy.
According to Kim, groups connected to the CCP sought to topple him in the June Democratic primary, attempting to sway the election outcome in the predominantly Asian-populated Flushing district. “There were clear patterns of foreign influence trying to dictate the outcome of the election,” Kim stated. “They were trying to steal the Flushing seat.” Kim won the election by a narrow margin of 443 votes.
At the heart of this conspiracy is Linda Sun, a former aide to both Governors Kathy Hochul and Andrew Cuomo. Sun, along with her husband Christopher Hu, was arrested and charged with operating as unregistered foreign agents on behalf of the CCP. According to federal prosecutors, Sun used her position in the governor’s office to interfere with U.S. foreign policy, including blocking diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties with Taiwan, a critical geopolitical issue for China. In exchange, Sun and her husband allegedly received millions of dollars in kickbacks, which they used to fund a lavish lifestyle.
What makes this case particularly disturbing is the CCP’s targeted influence on New York’s Asian communities. Kim has long been a vocal critic of the CCP, especially in his support for Taiwan, which has governed itself independently since 1949 but is still considered by China as part of its territory. The CCP’s tactics in Kim’s race included backing his Democratic primary opponent, Yi Andy Chen, through endorsements from the American Chinese Commerce Association, a group with alleged CCP connections. This group is headed by John Chan, who has reportedly maintained close ties with Chinese officials and has been involved in organizing pro-Beijing efforts.
The brazen influence of the CCP goes beyond the local political arena, according to Kim. “It’s a very layered operation,” he said, warning that U.S. elections may be entering dangerous territory if foreign powers continue to exert influence unchecked. The plot to replace him, while aimed at local politics, represents a larger effort by China to infiltrate U.S. governance and disrupt its democratic processes.
This revelation has prompted outrage among many, particularly in light of the growing CCP influence in U.S. cities with significant Asian populations. Kim noted that while the majority of immigrants from China and other parts of Asia are fleeing communism and seeking freedom in the U.S., there is a “new wave of organizations tied to the CCP” whose loyalty lies with Beijing, not with American values. These organizations are using political influence to suppress critics of the CCP, even going as far as attempting to install candidates who will advance China’s interests.
Sun’s involvement in this scandal, using her privileged position within the state government, is a chilling example of how deeply the CCP has infiltrated U.S. institutions. By facilitating meetings with Chinese officials, blocking Taiwanese representatives, and working to weaken U.S.-Taiwan relations, Sun’s actions went beyond mere corruption. She actively undermined U.S. foreign policy, a clear and dangerous breach of national security.
This case highlights the growing concern of foreign powers, particularly China, attempting to manipulate U.S. politics. Kim’s narrow escape in the election, thanks to his staunch defense of democratic values and his willingness to speak out, serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities within the U.S. political system. As Kim put it, “I don’t know how we can stop it,” reflecting the growing challenges faced by American politicians and the electorate in guarding against such foreign interference.
ACZ Editor: It makes you wonder how many times this is replicated around the country. And it is not just ethnic Chinese who are subject to the influence of the Chinese Communist Party, many greedy people in mid level positions power are corruptible, in government offices, in the media and in industry.
