Did Fauci Ignore the COVID Chinese Lab Leak Intel to Cover his Butt?

Newly released diary entries from former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci have reignited one of the most contentious debates surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the diary entries released by Sen. Rand Paul ahead of a Senate hearing, Fauci was briefed by U.S. intelligence officials who described information pointing toward activities at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Those briefings included reports of intercepted Chinese communications, intelligence from confidential sources, and concerns involving experiments on pangolin coronaviruses.

The diary indicates that CIA personnel told Fauci they believed Chinese authorities had not been transparent about laboratory activities in Wuhan. Fauci recorded that the CIA described intercepted communications concerning pangolin viruses transferred to Wuhan and intelligence suggesting that unknown military-related experiments may have been conducted there.

Despite hearing those concerns, Fauci continued to espouse that a natural origin was the more likely explanation. He wrote that the CIA personnel were “naive and uninformed” and even questioned whether he should have legal representation during the meeting, concluding, “There is something very fishy about all of this.”

Multiple Agencies Agreed with the Lab Leak Intel

Only weeks later, Fauci met with National Security Council officials after what he described as a more formal intelligence briefing. In his diary, he wrote that the FBI was convinced COVID-19 originated from a laboratory leak in Wuhan. Fauci dismissed the bureau’s reasoning, writing that its conclusions “do not make any sense.”

Instead, he encouraged officials to consult scientists who had publicly argued for a natural origin, including Kristian Andersen, one of the authors of the influential March 2020 paper arguing that a laboratory origin was implausible. Fauci wrote that he explained why he believed the virus had “almost certainly” evolved naturally while maintaining that he kept “an open mind” regarding a laboratory accident.

Subsequent intelligence assessments have evolved over time. The FBI has maintained that a laboratory incident is the most likely explanation. The Department of Energy later reached a similar conclusion. The CIA eventually announced that a laboratory origin was considered more likely. Other agencies have favored a natural origin or remained undecided.

Questions About Wuhan Funding Continue

The second major issue revived by the diary release concerns American funding connected to research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

For years, critics have argued that grants awarded by NIAID through EcoHealth Alliance ultimately supported coronavirus research at the Wuhan laboratory. Fauci consistently testified that NIH did not fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, while Sen. Rand Paul (a medical doctor) repeatedly argued otherwise. Whether the funded work met the scientific and regulatory definition of gain-of-function research remains disputed and continues to be debated by investigators and scientists.

Recently released diary entries also reveal that Fauci privately communicated with longtime adviser Dr. David Morens while allegations surrounding EcoHealth Alliance and Wuhan funding were unfolding. The New York Post reported that Fauci wrote he intended to arrange conversations with Morens after accusations surfaced that NIAID grants may have contributed to research connected to the Wuhan laboratory.

Other previously released emails describe Morens telling EcoHealth Alliance president Peter Daszak that efforts were underway to minimize damage to Daszak, NIH, and NIAID, while also discussing unofficial channels for communicating with Fauci. Fauci has previously testified that Morens was not advising him on institute policy and that he was unaware of Morens’ activities involving EcoHealth Alliance.

The Debate Has Not Ended

The diary itself confirms that Fauci knew respected intelligence agencies were investigating a possible laboratory accident. It also confirms that he actively argued against those conclusions during meetings with intelligence officials. Whether that reflects sound scientific judgment, misplaced confidence or an agenda to escape blame remains a matter of continuing public debate.

A Chain of Facts That Raises Questions

The newly released material creates a sequence of events that deserves careful scrutiny. Fauci learned that CIA personnel possessed intelligence about unusual activity at the Wuhan laboratory. He later learned that the FBI believed a laboratory leak was the most likely explanation for the pandemic.

At the same time, his agency had approved grants that ultimately supported coronavirus research involving the Wuhan Institute of Virology through EcoHealth Alliance. He continued to publicly argue that a natural origin was the most likely explanation while defending NIH funding decisions and denying that NIH had funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan laboratory.

These facts do not by themselves prove that Fauci intentionally concealed the true origin of COVID-19 or sought to protect himself from political or legal consequences. However, they do provide a factual chain from which some observers infer that Fauci had a personal and institutional incentive to resist the laboratory leak theory.

Whether that inference is ultimately correct remains unresolved, but the release of the diary has ensured that questions about what Fauci knew, when he knew it, and how his public statements aligned with the intelligence available to him will continue to be examined.
