“Go Find Another Sucker”: Trump’s Warning to BRICS Nations on the US Dollar

In a fiery statement that has sent shockwaves through global economic circles, President-elect Donald Trump delivered a blunt message to the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and their newer partners Egypt, Iran, UAE, and Ethiopia. His warning: attempts to move away from the US dollar in international trade will be met with severe consequences, including a 100% tariff on their exports to the United States.

The Context: BRICS and De-Dollarization

The controversy stems from a recent BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, where member nations explored strategies to strengthen local currencies and reduce reliance on the dollar. Discussions included enhancing the BRICS Cross-Border Payments Initiative and potentially creating a unified BRICS currency. While these efforts remain in their infancy, the move signals a broader shift as some nations, particularly Russia and China, seek alternatives to dollar dominance in global trade.

India, however, has distanced itself from these ambitions. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified in October that de-dollarization is neither a part of India’s economic policy nor its strategic goals. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the need for trade “workarounds” with nations unable to transact in dollars due to existing U.S. policies.

Trump’s Response: Tariffs and Tough Talk

Donald Trump, known for his combative rhetoric, made his stance unequivocal in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” he wrote. Trump demanded a commitment from BRICS nations to abandon any plans for a new currency or risk losing access to the U.S. market entirely.

Trump’s sharpest jab came in the form of a dismissive taunt: “They can go find another sucker!” He dismissed the possibility of the BRICS nations replacing the dollar in global trade, calling such efforts futile.

Economic Implications: A Return to Tariff Wars?

Trump’s threat of a 100% tariff on BRICS exports resurrects memories of his first presidency, marked by trade wars with China and other nations. This aggressive stance is part of his broader vision of economic “reciprocity,” where the U.S. retaliates against protectionist trade practices. Trump has long criticized nations like India, China, and Brazil for imposing high tariffs on U.S. goods, claiming that his policies would make America “extraordinarily wealthy” by leveling the playing field.

While India has often been singled out as a major tariff offender, Trump has simultaneously praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and emphasized the strong U.S.-India relationship. This duality highlights the complexity of balancing economic pressure with strategic alliances.

Reactions and Uncertain Futures

Trump’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions globally. Critics argue that his aggressive rhetoric could alienate key allies and destabilize international trade. Others see it as a bold defense of U.S. economic interests, particularly amid growing challenges to dollar hegemony.

For BRICS nations, the road ahead remains uncertain. While some members, like Russia and China, may push forward with de-dollarization plans, others, like India, remain cautious. The feasibility of creating a unified BRICS currency also faces significant hurdles.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a strong advocate for reducing dollar dependency, remarked during the summit, “The U.S. has weaponized the dollar for too long. The time has come to explore alternatives that serve our shared interests and insulate us from economic coercion.” However, he acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting, “While we have made significant progress, creating a viable alternative to the SWIFT financial system and the dollar remains a formidable task.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The world is no longer unipolar. The reliance on the dollar creates vulnerabilities that are being exploited. A diversified monetary system is essential for global stability.”

India, however, struck a cautious tone. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified that de-dollarization is not on India’s agenda. “I think you have us confused with someone else,” Jaishankar quipped during a talk at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “We have never actively targeted the dollar. That’s not part of our economic, political, or strategic policy. However, where trade partners are unable to transact in dollars, we are compelled to explore alternatives.”

Trump’s warning to BRICS nations underscores the high stakes of global economic realignments. His threats of tariffs signal a potential resurgence of protectionist policies, which could reshape trade relationships and impact economies worldwide. As the world watches, one thing is clear: the battle over the dollar’s dominance is far from over, and the United States, under Trump’s leadership, is prepared to fight fiercely to defend its position.

Whether Trump’s gamble will strengthen America’s economic standing or spark new global tensions remains to be seen. For now, his message to the BRICS nations is loud and clear: “Go find another sucker.”

ACZ Editor: This is a reiteration of the 100% tariff strategy position. China is desperately seeking to divide the world with BRICS as a new trading block that excludes the dollar, and trades largely in Yuan. But the Yuan is not a floating currency, it is controlled directly by the Chinese government. BRICS members have already seen China manipulate the Yuan to its advantage, much to the chagrin of Russia (which currently has few options.). Trump is attempting to break this trading block, and keep the dollar as the trading currency – which has worked well for the world, and is a massive economic advantage for the U.S.
