New Book: China Infiltrated the RNC’s Email Last Summer

A Silent Breach in the Heat of the Election

As the Republican National Committee (RNC) prepared for its 2024 national convention in Milwaukee, a serious security breach was unfolding behind the scenes. For months, Chinese state-backed hackers had infiltrated the RNC’s email system, siphoning off internal communications and searching for intelligence, according to newly revealed information from journalist Alex Isenstadt’s upcoming book, Revenge: The Inside Story of Trump’s Return to Power.

The breach, which went unreported until now, was discovered by Microsoft in early July 2024. The tech giant alerted top RNC officials, revealing that the hackers had been lurking in their email system undetected for an extended period. This revelation came just days before the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Why Was the RNC Targeted?

According to sources familiar with the matter, the hackers were primarily interested in the Republican Party’s stance on Taiwan. In 2016, the GOP’s official platform had called for a free-trade agreement with Taiwan, a policy that directly opposed Beijing’s interests. However, by 2024, the party’s platform had been drastically reduced in length and contained no mention of Taiwan. The timing of the hack suggests that China wanted to assess whether the Republicans would maintain a hardline stance on the island if they regained power.

A Decision to Stay Quiet

Despite the severity of the breach, RNC officials, including Trump campaign co-chair Chris LaCivita, opted not to report the incident to the FBI. Their reasoning? They feared that the information would be leaked to the media, potentially damaging the party’s image and revealing internal vulnerabilities.

While the FBI was not officially informed, certain elements within the U.S. government were aware of the breach, though how they discovered it remains unclear. U.S. intelligence agencies, known for their ability to track foreign cyber activity, may have picked up signals of the intrusion through digital surveillance.

Was Anyone Caught?

So far, no individuals have been publicly identified or charged in connection with the hack. China, as expected, has denied any involvement. “China firmly opposes and combats cyberattacks and cyber theft in all forms,” stated Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington.

However, U.S. intelligence agencies have long accused Chinese-backed hackers of conducting espionage against both Democratic and Republican campaigns. This breach is just one of many attempts by foreign adversaries to infiltrate American political institutions.

The full scope of the hack remains unknown. Microsoft and the RNC have not disclosed how many emails were accessed or whether any sensitive strategy documents were stolen. But history suggests that such intrusions can be deeply damaging.

Similar cyber-espionage incidents have occurred before. In 2008, Beijing successfully hacked both Barack Obama’s and John McCain’s presidential campaigns. In 2016, Russian hackers infiltrated the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and leaked damaging emails to disrupt the election. The breach of the RNC, however, did not lead to any publicly released documents—at least not yet.

China’s Growing Cyber Threat

The RNC hack is part of a broader pattern of cyber espionage from Beijing. Just months earlier, U.S. officials had warned that Chinese hackers had embedded themselves within critical American infrastructure, potentially positioning themselves to disrupt water, energy, and telecommunications networks in the event of a U.S.-China conflict.

This latest breach underscores the ongoing cyber warfare between the U.S. and China. It also raises serious concerns about the security of political organizations, particularly in the lead-up to high-stakes elections.

The Bigger Picture

The timing of the RNC hack is particularly significant. It coincided with another major cyber intrusion—this time by Iranian operatives, who targeted the Trump campaign. Unlike the Chinese hackers, the Iranians attempted to leak stolen documents to the press, though most media outlets declined to publish them.

These incidents highlight a growing trend: foreign nations are increasingly using cyber tactics to gain intelligence and influence American elections. The fact that the RNC chose not to report the breach to federal authorities also raises questions about how political organizations handle cybersecurity threats—and whether political considerations are overshadowing national security concerns.

With the revelation of this breach, pressure may mount on the RNC to explain why it kept the attack hidden. Congress and intelligence officials could launch investigations into the extent of the damage and what steps need to be taken to prevent future breaches.

ACZ Editor: In the intelligence community, “leadership comms” are considered the holy grail. If you know what your opposition is thinking then you can counter at every turn, it is a massive force multiplier. While this was only during the campaign of one of the candidates, the insight into future policies was invaluable to China. This was a major coup for China.
