Top General Zhang Accused of Giving Nuclear Secrets to the U.S.

China’s senior military leadership has been thrown into turmoil after authorities accused one of the country’s most powerful generals of leaking nuclear weapons data to the United States and taking bribes in exchange for political favors. The case centers on Gen. Zhang Youxia, once regarded as the closest military ally of Chinese leader Xi Jinping. His removal has left China’s armed forces hollowed out at the top and raised serious questions about military readiness and decision making.

Zhang Youxia, 75, served as vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, the Communist Party body that controls the armed forces. He was not only one of China’s most senior generals but also a longtime personal confidant of Xi. Both men are known as princelings, descendants of revolutionary leaders who rose to power after the Communist victory in 1949. Zhang’s father fought alongside Xi’s father, forging a bond that lasted decades.

Because of this history, Zhang was widely seen as untouchable. His sudden removal marks the most dramatic purge of China’s military leadership since the Mao era.

Zhang’s Accusations

A WSJ report says that according to people familiar with a closed door briefing delivered to top officers, Zhang is accused of multiple serious offenses. These include forming political cliques inside the military, abusing his authority within the Central Military Commission, and accepting massive bribes in exchange for promotions.

The most explosive allegation is that Zhang leaked core technical data related to China’s nuclear weapons program to the United States. This accusation goes far beyond corruption and strikes at the heart of national security.

China’s Defense Ministry publicly announced only that Zhang was under investigation for severe violations of party discipline and state law, offering no details. The fuller accusations were disclosed privately to senior officers.

Authorities say evidence tying Zhang to a nuclear security breach emerged through a separate investigation into Gu Jun, the former general manager of China National Nuclear Corp, which oversees both civilian and military nuclear programs. Gu was placed under investigation for discipline violations shortly before Zhang’s case became public.

During the internal briefing, officials said the probe into Gu uncovered links between Zhang and a breach within China’s nuclear sector. While specifics were not disclosed, investigators believe sensitive nuclear weapons data was compromised.

The scenario presented to senior officers suggests Zhang used his position to trade classified information while also taking bribes tied to military procurement and promotions.

Bribery Allegations and the Li Shangfu Connection

Zhang is also accused of accepting large sums of money in exchange for advancing careers within the military. One of the most prominent cases involves Li Shangfu, the former defense minister.

Authorities allege Zhang helped elevate Li in return for bribes. Li disappeared from public view in 2023 and was later expelled from the Communist Party for corruption. His downfall now appears directly tied to Zhang’s case.

Investigators are also scrutinizing Zhang’s past command of the Shenyang Military Region from 2007 to 2012. A special task force has been sent to Shenyang to examine his network of allies and decisions made during that period.

What is Left for the Chinese Military

Zhang’s removal, combined with the investigation of Gen. Liu Zhenli, has left the Central Military Commission nearly empty of experienced commanders. Of the six professional military members who served when the current commission began in 2022, only one active uniformed officer remains.

That survivor, Gen. Zhang Shengmin, is a political officer rather than a combat commander. This leaves the People’s Liberation Army with a severe leadership vacuum at the top.

More than 50 senior officers and defense industry executives have been removed or placed under investigation over the past two and a half years. Analysts warn that such a sweeping purge is bound to weaken coordination, morale, and readiness.

Implications for Military Decisions and Taiwan

The purge has direct implications for China’s approach to Taiwan. With no powerful generals left to debate or slow decisions, strategic choices now rest almost entirely with Xi himself.

At the same time, analysts believe the disruption could reduce the near term likelihood of a major military operation. A weakened command structure may limit the military’s ability to execute complex campaigns, pushing Beijing toward pressure tactics short of war.

Xi’s crackdown signals that corruption, patronage networks, and compromised state secrets are seen as existential threats to China’s ambitions. But by decapitating the leadership, he may have traded internal control for operational uncertainty.

A Military Under One Man’s Control

Zhang Youxia’s downfall marks a turning point for China’s armed forces. Xi now stands almost alone at the top, with unprecedented authority over military decisions.

This consolidation of power gives Xi greater freedom of action. It also raises profound questions about whether he is receiving accurate information about the true state of his military.

As China faces high stakes negotiations and mounting tensions over Taiwan, the purge of its top general has left the country with more centralized power and fewer experienced voices to guide it. The result is a military that is firmly under Xi’s command but potentially less prepared for the challenges ahead.

If you want, next steps could be tightening the opening paragraph for punch, sharpening the Taiwan section for more menace, or trimming 5 to 10 percent for maximum readability without losing force.

ACZ Editor: Such a wide range of charges means they are piling on fake charges (much like the State of New York vs Trump). The only important one is the leaking of secrets. It could be real or it could be that they are lifting dialog from an official meeting of some kind and found and excuse for making a charge in innocent official verbiage.

If Zhang received bribes for spilling Chinese military secrets that means he has been in essence a spy for America. This would be a huge advantage for the U.S., not that we need their nuclear technology. Knowing the state of their nuclear arsenal, which is rumored to be poorly maintained, and similar information about their non-nuclear forces, would be value beyond measure.

Chinese purges are complicated.
