What Is the Golden Dome?

President Donald Trump’s new missile defense initiative, dubbed the “Golden Dome,” is being billed as the most ambitious homeland defense system in U.S. history. With a projected price tag between $125 and $175 billion, the system aims to protect the U.S. from advanced missile threats, including those launched from space. Trump says the system will use a combination of ground-based and space-based technology to detect, intercept, and destroy missiles at every stage of flight, from launch to final descent.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump declared, “We will intercept missiles even if they are launched from space. And we’ll do it before the end of my term.” His second term ends in 2029, and he has asked Congress for an initial $25 billion to start development. Space Force Vice Chief Gen. Michael Guetlein has been tapped to lead the effort.

The Golden Dome would be the first U.S. missile defense system with weapons stationed in orbit. It will incorporate lasers, radar arrays, satellite-based interceptors, and rapid-response detection systems. The system builds on existing platforms like the Patriot missile battery and incorporates new technologies capable of countering hypersonic threats from adversaries like China and Russia.

China Pushes Back Hard

China has strongly condemned the plan. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning warned that the Golden Dome has “strong offensive implications” and represents a dangerous shift toward the militarization of outer space. She argued that the system violates the Outer Space Treaty, which emphasizes peaceful use of space, and could ignite a space arms race.

“This project will heighten the risk of turning space into a war zone,” Mao said during a press briefing. “The United States, by putting itself first and being obsessed with pursuing absolute security, violates the principle of mutual security and undermines global strategic balance.”

China urged the U.S. to cancel the project immediately and called for renewed efforts to build trust among global powers. “We are seriously concerned,” Mao repeated, saying the U.S. should abandon the development of space-based missile interceptors to avoid further deterioration in international stability.

American intelligence has warned for years that both China and Russia have deployed anti-satellite and space-based offensive systems. China’s ability to track U.S. space assets has grown dramatically, and recent reports from the U.S. Space Force detail China’s experiments with “dogfighting” satellites—multiple objects maneuvering around one another in orbit, apparently practicing on-orbit attack maneuvers.

According to Gen. Chance Saltzman, vice chief of space operations, these developments are “mind-boggling” and show that China is preparing for war in space. However, Beijing argues it is the U.S. that is escalating tensions by placing weapons in orbit and ignoring existing arms control norms.

The Cost and the Controversy

Trump initially cited a $125 billion price tag, but internal estimates from the Congressional Budget Office suggest that the space-based portions alone could cost over $540 billion across two decades. Trump’s current proposal includes a $25 billion launch fund built into a tax break bill moving through Congress.

Lockheed Martin, the lead contractor on the project, says all components will be developed domestically. “This is a national shield made in America,” said COO Frank St. John in a recent interview. Still, skeptics argue the system is being rushed. The Pentagon is still drafting the basic requirements for the project, and some officials warn that Trump’s approach—choosing a concept before finalizing technical goals—reverses the normal defense acquisition process.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink called the Golden Dome “still in the conceptual stage,” but acknowledged the Pentagon is under pressure to move quickly due to the pace of technological advances by America’s adversaries.

The Kremlin issued a more measured response but noted that the Golden Dome might prompt a return to strategic arms talks. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the world’s legal framework for arms control has “ceased to be valid” due to the U.S. withdrawal from prior treaties, and that new agreements must now be developed “for the security of the entire planet.”

Although Trump has not spoken directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Golden Dome, he told reporters at the White House, “At the right time, we will.”

With China and Russia both expressing concern, the Golden Dome is already becoming a flashpoint in the debate over the future of space and global security. Trump remains firm, saying the U.S. will not be caught off guard by new missile threats.

“America will lead in space,” Trump said, “and we will defend our nation from wherever the threat comes—including from the stars.” Whether the project becomes reality or remains a costly concept, it has already shaken the foundations of international diplomacy.
