U.S. Pulls Japan and South Korea Together, Amid China’s Rising Aggression

The United States is solidifying its bond with Japan and South Korea, as concerns over China’s increasing assertiveness loom large. President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol are meeting at the iconic presidential retreat, Camp David.

Historically, the relationship between Japan and South Korea has been tense and complicated. Stemming from Japan’s occupation of the Korean Peninsula in the first half of the 20th century, memories of wartime atrocities have kept the two nations at odds for decades. Issues such as compensation for wartime labor and “comfort women” have repeatedly strained their ties. Their shared concerns about China and North Korea have provided some common ground in recent times. But as they come to the Camp David summit, it marks not just a strengthening of ties with the U.S. but also a tentative step towards mending their own historically fraught relationship.

This Camp David summit, marking the first solo meeting among these three nations, reflects the deepening ties between the U.S.’ two main Asian security partners. One significant announcement expected is the establishment of a yearly summit and technological advancements to help the countries communicate swiftly during crises.

Victor Cha, a senior official from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed out that the summit holds immense importance, especially at a time when global geopolitics feels “so uncertain and unstable.” He also mentioned how China’s assertive actions, along with North Korea’s provocations, have heightened tensions in the region.

Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China, voiced Beijing’s concerns, stating they oppose any formation of exclusive groupings that might escalate antagonism and challenge strategic security. Campbell, however, assured that the aim is not to contain China but to maintain regional peace and stability. He said, “What they witness is a China whose actions have changed in recent years in ways that threaten their security.”

Rahm Emanuel, the U.S. ambassador to Japan, gave a sharp take on the situation: “China, in the region, will never win the award for the good neighbor policy. This region is desperate for more of America. China is a risk to the region.”

The summit also addresses historical grievances between Japan and South Korea, stemming from Japan’s wartime actions. The White House has been instrumental in urging the two nations to reconcile and move forward. Campbell commended the leadership of Yoon and Kishida for their efforts in mending ties, calling it “a breathtaking kind of diplomacy.”

Amid these developments, China has not remained silent. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin warned against “bloc confrontation” in the Asia-Pacific. He said, “Attempts to form various exclusive groups will definitely spark vigilance and opposition.”

As a backdrop to the diplomatic maneuverings, China showed military might. Japan’s Defense Ministry reported spotting Chinese and Russian ships near Japanese islands and witnessed Russian aircraft flying over the Tsushima Strait.

China’s rising aggression is of great concern to the region. The U.S. orchestration of military blocs against China could serve to prevent war, but that is far from certain, as Xi is arrogant enough to think China deserves to dominate in this region.
